Overview of the Internship Program

Students in the major may earn 4 to 12 upper division credits (SP 409) toward the required 56 credits needed to complete the Communication Studies Major. Note: 12 credits is the maximum a student in the major may earn in an internship. Communication minors may earn up to 8 credits.

See Credits = Hours

Students either:

  • Develop their own internship job site
  • Draw from the Internship list of sites which is kept in the Communication Department office (NH #232) and can also be found on the Internship Bulletin Board
  • Consult with faculty for potential sites

To qualify for an Internship: Students must have taken at least 5 courses in Communication Studies (20 credits), 3 of which must be upper division (Junior or Senior). It is highly recommended that SP 311 be taken prior to the internship. Students must also be in good academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or better).

Students must attend an initial orientation meeting with Jil Freeman to establish eligibility and begin arrangements for the internship. Students must also attend four regularly scheduled meetings each term they are enrolled in the program.

Students are required to submit a site contract, complete a set of theoretical assignments, submit educational objectives & resume, complete a term paper and final presentation.  At the end of the internship experience, Supervisor & Student Evaluations must be submitted. See Syllabus and Forms.

The Communication Department Internship Program is offered every term (including Summer) and is open to Communication majors and minors.
