Priya Kapoor, Assistant Professor and and Director of Graduate Studies. Dr. Kapoor earned a PhD from Ohio University, and holds a master's from Cornell and bachelor's from Delhi University, New Delhi, India. She teaches introduction to intercultural communication, problems of intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, and gender, race and class in media. Her areas of expertise include intercultural communication, social cultural impacts of mass media, globalization of culture, and international development theory. Cynthia-Lou Coleman, Associate Professor. Dr. Coleman earned a PhD in journalism and mass communication from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and holds a master's from Cornell and bachelor's from California State University-Sonoma. She teaches research methods, persuasion, public relations, campaigns, political communication and health communication. Her areas of expertise include health, risk and science communication, with attention to social construction of messages and public understanding of risk. Leslie T. Good, Associate Professor. Dr. Good earned a PhD from Stanford University, and holds a master's and bachelor's from the University of Oregon. She teaches various courses in media studies for both the Department of Communication and the University Studies interdisciplinary program. Susan B. Poulsen, Assistant Professor and Chair, Department of Communication. Dr. Poulsen earned a PhD from the University of Washington, and holds a master's from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and bachelor's from the University of Washington. She teaches urban communication, intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, communication consultation, qualitative methods and data analysis, and metaphor and narrative analysis. Her areas of expertise include speech cognate area configurations such as culture/communication/cognition, time/space and place and metaphor analysis. L. David Ritchie, Professor. Dr. Ritchie earned a PhD from Stanford University, and holds a master's from the University of Oregon and Bachelor's from Reed College. He teaches communication inquiry, introduction to graduate studies, metaphor in everyday talk, conversation structure and process, humor and playful communication, communication and cognition, and language meaning and interpretation. His recent publications have focused primarily on metaphor analysis, metaphor theory, and playful language. Gerald Sussman, Professor. Dr. Sussman earned a PhD from the University of Hawaii, Manoa/East-West Center and holds a master's from the University of Philippines and bachelor's from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He shares a joint appointment with Urban Studies & Planning and coordinates the Media Studies cluster for the University Studies program. His courses include political communication (SP 420U/520), critical theories in mass communications (SP 422U/522), international communication (SP 427U/527), and information cities (USP 457U/557). Areas of specialization are urban, institutional and structural aspects and political economy of media and communications.
